Stewart retired from the USDA-National Wildlife Research Center at the end of 2025, and is beginning the next chapter of his career.  His work focuses on the emerging issues associated with the management and conservation of large carnivores in a human dominated world.  Stewart attained degrees in ecology and wildlife biology from Colorado State University (B.S. and Ph.D) and University of Nevada, Reno (M.S). His current interests and energy are focused on recovery of endangered black-footed ferrets and Mexican wolves. and reducing conflict between people and bears in urban and agricultural environments. He is based at Colorado State University and is a member of the BSG’s Human-Bear Conflict Expert Team.
